The Overlook: A Modern Seattle Home Above Lake Washington
Located in Seattle, this east facing site commands dramatic views of Lake Washington and sweeping views of the Cascade mountains from Mt. Rainier to the south to Mt. Baker in the north. Although, the site is half acre in size it is on a steep slope concentrating construction in the front third of the property.
The home is built in an established neighborhood with a mix of traditional and contemporary homes. The homeowner wanted this home to reflect not only the traditional aspects of the existing context but also to reflect her contemporary tastes.
Designed by Seattle-based architecture practice, Silk | Cavassa | Marchetti (SCM), The home’s exterior is defined by two gables. The gables provide the home’s distinctive identity. Each is thoughtfully proportioned and minimally detailed. The home is clad in white painted cedar siding which contrasts with the black railing, window frames, and a dark metal roof to provide an enthusiastically contemporary expression.
This merger of traditional forms and tailored details perfectly reflects the homeowner’s goal to build a home that is classical enough to stand the test of time while reflecting her contemporary tastes.
Tall ceilings and large expanses of glass take full advantage of the views, allowing ample light reflecting off white walls to fill the home throughout the day.
To accommodate the homeowner’s requirements within a relatively small building footprint, the home needed four stories. The garage is at the lowest level. The main floor is one floor up and accommodates all the main living functions including living room, dining room, kitchen, den, and entry. The third level accommodates three bedrooms.
An additional bedroom and a dramatic roof top outdoor terrace, taking full advantage of the unparalleled views, are on the top level.
The interiors, also designed by SCM, are crisp and fresh befitting the goals of the project. A balance of soft colors and richly textured fabrics perfectly reflects our client’s contemporary lifestyle while providing a quiet sanctuary away from a hectic work life.
The stairs are centrally located connecting all four levels and looking out on the steep hillside behind the home with a dramatic three-story tall glass wall. It is an important design element that divides the home into its two main volumes.
